Power Armor
The idea of an exosuit or other forms of mechanical enhancements to a soldier's mobility and strength had been the subject of numerous development efforts throughout the early portion of the century. These ranged from combat frames that helped alleviate the load of a soldier's equipment to fully sealed armored suits which offered enhanced protection from small arms fire and fragmentation. Several systems were extensively field tested, but none had been issued for wide spread use by the start of the Battle of Battipaglia.
Point Defense Weapons
Point defense weapons systems, or PDWs, are weapons designed to track and intercept incoming munitions or craft. They focus on putting up a wall of projectiles to deflect, damage, and destroy threats to their parent warship.
Plasma Weapons
The first plasma weapons were created at the turn of the last century. These gigantic and unwieldy laboratory-bound devices would heat a gas until it became ionized, then project this plasma toward the intended target. Their more modern incarnations create a mass of impermeable plasma which is then accelerated down the barrel to three times the speed of sound by electromagnetic fields.
Multi-Layered Armor Schemes
The URN's primary passive defensive system is the use of a multi-layered armor scheme which is designed to stop, dissipate, and or deflect an incoming attack. This is achieved through the use of standard armor plating, electric reactive armor, and the effective use of double hulls and their resulting hull cavities.
Missiles
While the Umbrian Republic Navy utilizes railguns for both point defense and ship to ship engagements, they supplement these weapons with extensive missile armament on most warships. Housed in vertical launch tubes buried in the outer hull of the vessels themselves, small frontline warships may carry hundreds of these munitions, while the largest battleships are equipped with thousands.
Legionary Organization
The basic formation of the Umbrian Republic Army, the legion is a unit of ten thousand soldiers which is considered large enough to allow for independent tasking and assignment. A legion's equipment will vary based on the type of legion and its specific mission parameters. It may also be augmented with independent sub-units which provide specific support functionality.
