Umbrians are an advanced bipedal mammalian species which developed on their homeworld of Umbria. They have created an advanced society predicated on the use of technology to solve the problems of daily living in large communities. Art, science, and architecture are some of the most important facets of their shared culture, and society is generally managed through collaboration and consensus than the application of force.

Umbrians average in height from 1.7  to 1.88 m for men and 1.55 m to 1.68 m for women. They retain strong muscularity from their roots as hunter/gatherers, which is supported by an efficient respiratory and circulatory systems and a fast metabolism which enables them to be physically active for extended periods.

Skin color can vary, with the majority of Umbrians tending towards shades of orange. Other colorations can be observed, especially for second or third generation colonists on some of the more extreme worlds the Umbrians have inhabited and include various hues of yellow and red.

Secondary characteristics such as eye color and hair color can vary widely.  The most common eye colors are brown, green, and hazel. Umbrian hair color ranges from sandy browns to jet blacks. Many Umbrians choose to artificially change these features in order to assert their own individuality..

As Umbrians ventured into space, they would find that their forms were quite resilient to minor variations from their homeworld's natural environment. However, the perils of interstellar space have raised questions about whether Umbrians should take a more active role in their biological evolution.

Several leading scientific institutions, such as the Umbrian Academy of Sciences, have begun to travel down the path of exploring technological modifications to their base genetic makeup. Experts predict these efforts are still decades away from producing practical breakthroughs.
