Umbria is the crown jewel of the Republic and the homeworld of the Umbrian people. Sixty percent of its surface is covered by ocean, while the remainder is made up of continents and island chains featuring lush vegetation, striking rocky outcroppings, and verdant grassy plains. Its capital, Perugia, is host to the capitol of the Umbrian Republic and home to the Republic's Senate and Triumvirate, or executive body.

Sitting comfortably within its parent star's habitation zone, early Umbrians found the environment of their homeworld almost ideally suited for their growth and development. With minimal axial tilt, its seasonal changes were mild. Lacking a natural satellite, its ocean's tides were calm and easily navigable, leading to rapid exploration and ensuring the interconnected nature of Umbrian society from an early stage.

Umbrian society would bloom amidst the natural bounty of the planet, its population quickly growing into the low billions without overly stressing its extensive biosphere. The Umbrian people in turn were careful to safeguard their natural resources, ensuring that they could obtain the materials they needed in a sustainable fashion.

As their civilization matured, Umbria's cities would grow up instead of out, and the capital of Perugia quickly approached population densities in the neighborhood of thirty thousand people per kilometer square. Glittering high-rises would crowd the urban core of Umbria's cities, connected by numerous terraces, walkways, and boulevards.

Public transportation was provided by a rail system suspended amongst the towers and by a fleet of air cars which traveled in designated 'lanes', with altitude and direction of travel all controlled centrally by the cities’ administrative center.

At the very top of this society, both figuratively and literally, were the ultra-rich, whose wealth enabled them to purchase penthouses in the clouds. Rumors of these elaborate residences would fill the Republic's gutter press, and the detachment from the surface became symbolic of their ability to isolate themselves from society proper.

Those who yearned for a life outside of the towering urban cores established vast farming communities among the planet's plains, where there was more room and less activity to contend with. These communities would become fiercely protective of their way of life and of the members of their communities, and a few failed attempts to suburbanize Umbrian life would be met with significant resistance from these independent-minded people.

The Umbrians themselves reached the stars at the dawn of the fifth millennia of their recorded history, and before long they had spread out to the nearest adjoining solar systems. As the Republic transitioned from a singular planetary system to a polity made up of multiple populations spread across numerous stars, the importance of Umbria remained constant.

Special care was taken to ensure that the various colony worlds continued to see themselves as part of one larger culture through the devolution of governance to local bodies. Umbrians across the Republic are also encouraged to make periodic trips back to their homeworld, where they can enjoy its carefully preserved natural wonders.

Despite these efforts, the Ascomanni War would create tensions between those Umbrians who remained on their homeworld and those who had migrated to the furthest corners of the Republic. For the residents of the capital, the war was far away, and few believed that the war would ever reach Umbria before the Republic military could check the invaders' progress.
