Constantly pulled to its breaking point and baked by the intense solar discharge of its parent trinary stars, Enaria is the physical embodiment of the Umbrians' mythic underworld. Active vulcanism coupled with its eccentric orbit around its parent stars ensure that what solidified surfaces manage to form are constantly in motion before being subsumed back down into the molten mantel of this hellish world.
Located on the edges of the Frontier closest to the galactic center, people would nonetheless attempt to settle the unforgiving world.
Perhaps motivated by the challenges posed by such seemingly insurmountable obstacles to settlement or exploitation, a few mining concerns succeeded in staking claims to the planet's mineral wealth. These early prospectors had originally hoped to use the molten nature of their prize to improve the efficiency of operations and turn its abundant lava into liquid gold.
Enaria would disappoint them.
The treacherous nature of the planet's surface would prove lethal for even the most well prepared. Frequent earthquakes dislodged early facilities, casting them into searing lava. Those that survived had to contend with clouds of noxious gasses which could be released without warning, overwhelming filtration systems and heavily corroding equipment.
For two decades, Enaria would be barely inhabited. It was so dangerous that the Colonial Affairs Commission took the unprecedented step of refusing to sanction its settlement, citing the numerous cases of fatal accidents.
The struggling colony's salvation would come from an unlikely source. The Umbrian Academy of Sciences, seeking an ideal testbed for a series of new gravitational generators, were drawn to the planet's unique conditions and specific magnetic fields.
The Academy succeeded in stabilizing a hunk of rock approximately ten kilometers square, which was held in place by gravitational fields. This artificial island floated on one of Enaria's larger lava lakes, and would provide the perfect position for the founding of the world's first permanent settlement: Gehenium.
The colony's new capital would soon grow as more individuals sought to use the Academy's discovery to their advantage.
Soon, a handful of deep pocketed interests would begin to build their own floating facilities. They would pioneer the use of these same fields to 'shake' nearby magma, using granular convection to pull the heavier elements to the surface. These would then be skimmed by specially designed robotic tenders, which in turn would feed a growing number of processing plants.
By 31145, more established names had entered the planet's mineral extraction industry, such as the Tasovo Mining Conglomerate. These heavyweights would bring with them the resources and safety practices expected of large mega-corporations. This development would dramatically expand operations on the hellish world, but the population stayed below one million people planet wide.
Enaria would become an important source of material for the Umbrian war effort following the invasion of the dreaded Ascomanni. Shipments of strategic metals, suspended in liquid form through the use of high-pressure containment, would be used to fuel the growing anchorage and shipyard at Safe Haven.
Despite this, the War Council chose not to assign forces to the world's defense, given the difficulty of defending the planet and the precarious nature of its settlements. When the Ascomanni attacked in 31150, approximately one tenth of the civilian population successfully evacuated before the alien invaders bombarded the Umbrian settlements into oblivion.
